In search of “fatin e jetës”

Sooner or later every Albanian family asks the same question – over dinner, at a dasma, usually with a wink: “Hë, kur po martohesh?” – so, when are you getting married? Behind the joke is a wish many of us know: to find someone to share your whole life with. In Albanian we call it “fatin e jetës” – the good fortune life gives you, the love of your life.

That is exactly what dua.com is for: a dating app just for Albanians – in Kosovo, in Albania and all across the diaspora. The name says it all: “Të dua” means “I love you”. According to the company, more than 900,000 people have already signed up. dua.com describes its goal like this: to bring Albanians together wherever they live – while preserving our culture, our values and our connections.

Someone who understands you without explanation

If you grew up in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, you know what it is like to live between two worlds. At home you speak Albanian, guests are sacred and family comes first – and outside you often have to explain. With someone who shares your roots, all that falls away: they laugh at the same jokes, dance the same valle at weddings and know why summer back home means so much.

That very feeling is where dua.com began. Founder Valon Asani grew up in Kosovo and later moved to Switzerland. On his visits home he saw how hard it was for Albanians in the diaspora to find someone who shares their humour and traditions. The first idea came in 2011; in 2019 it became dua.com.
